Catherine Ford is a British actress born in Bloomsbury. When her father's divorce from her family, she was raised to maturity by her mother, grandparents, and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford began to become interested in acting during her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it was not the right place for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian that became part of her repertoire in 1996.
